A financial adviser is a professional who provides services to improve the financial status of the client. Advisers may be accountants, investment representatives, insurance agents, financial planners, and attorneys.

There are fee-based advisers and fee-only advisers. Fee-based advisers charge for their services and receive commission from the products they sell. Fee-only advisers are paid by the client they offer services to. They don't collect commission thereby reducing any conflict-of-interest issues between themselves and the client.

Financial advisers provide retirement planning as well as investment services. They offer stocks, bonds, mutual funds, CDs, real estate trusts, futures, options, and insurance products.
