Voice over Internet Protocol - VOIP

Voice over internet protocol or VOIP is technology that allows you to make calls over the internet. VOIP calls can be placed through any VOIP provider. With a VOIP provider you plug your home phone into an adapter that plugs into your computer and for a monthly fee you can then place calls to anyone.

There are free websites that allow you to place VOIP calls, like skype.com. When you use these websites though the party you are calling has to also have an account with the provider and you have to have a VOIP headset. VOIP headsets can be purchased at office supply stores and are relatively inexpensive.
